Simon Rich trained with Alan Caiger-Smith at the Aldermaston Pottery in the early sixties and established his present workshop in Narberth in 1972.

For the last 25 years Simon has been working with and perfecting zinc crystalline glazes. The glazes are applied to porcelain and fired to 270 C. Then the kiln temperature is dropped to 1140 C and held for up to five hours to allow the zinc oxide to form the crystals.

In his search to attain the image to match what’s in his mind’s eye Simon uses other ceramic techniques: his smoked terrasigilata pieces are reminiscent of Greek burnished work, African bonfired pots and modern raku…
…and his glazed ware ranges in colour from his well-known azurite (blue to turquoise) to deep iron reds and, most recently, acid yellows.
