A new exhibition of paintings of Pembrokeshire (and Shropshire), at Art Matters Gallery in Tenby, shows the County from a fresh perspective. The artist, Penelope Timmis, who studied art at the Froebel Institute in London before raising a family and farming in the borders, returned to painting in 2000.
Still, now, combining the rigours of dairy farming with the development of her artistic talent, Penny works from her farmhouse studio in the Shropshire countryside. The result is an instantly recognizable and unique style, shortlisted for the Daily Mail’s ‘Not the Turner Prize’ and exhibited widely including at the Affordable Art Fair.
Fast free flowing drawing, bright and soft colours and calligraphic flourishes to finish a frill of waves or line of trees – Penny has produced a view of Pembrokeshire which economically and imaginatively captures the essence of a place. Much depends on the rapid impressions she records on the spot during her frequent visits to her family in Manorbier.
Included are landscapes from Barafundle to the Preselis, details of rocks and beaches from Stackpole to Solva and Newgale as well as manic red cockerels and technicolour tulips. Using acrylic, ink, watercolour and pastel, Penny often adds collage which provides unexpected texture and pattern to this already surprising work. Nothing stays still: seas rock and hills roll.
